Alan " Al " Jackson, Jr. (November 27, 1935 - December 1, 1975) was an American jazz musician and drummer. He formed the funk and jazz group, Booker T. & the M.G.'s . Jackson was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1935. [1] He played drums in recording sessions for many other musicians, including Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett. [1]

Jackson learned the essential lessons — how to play, and how not to overplay — on the job. His father, a bassist, was one of the top jazz players in Memphis in 1935, the year of Al Junior’s birth. He led his own 18-piece band, reading charts by Basie and other arrangers of the day.
Al Jackson, Jr. was the excellent drummer who kept Booker T. & the MG's in line, both on their own recordings as well as on dozens of sessions for artists contracted to Hi and Stax Records. Born in Memphis in 1934, he came up with producer Willie Mitchell at the Hi label and played on dozens of hits by Al Green and Ann Peebles, among others.
