Sie erhielt den Namen Akademia Teatralna Aleksander Zelwerowicz im Jahre 1996 und ist die Nachfolgeinstitution des 1932 von Aleksander Zelwerowicz und Leon Schiller gegründeten Staatlichen Theaterinstituts (PIST).
