Alfred de Vigny wurde am 27.03.1797 in Loches geboren; er starb am 17.09.1863 in Paris. Er stammte aus einer französischen Adelsfamilie. Seine Kindheit und Jugendjahre verbrachte er ab 1798 in Paris. Er besuchte das Lycée Bonaparte und trat 1814 als Fähnrich in den Dienst von Ludwig XVIII.
Alfred de Vigny is known for his philosophical plays, short stories, and poems, which are recognized as an important part of the French Romantic movement of the nineteenth century. In particular, his drama Chatterton contributed significantly to the development of the Romantic movement in French literature.
