Joe Cocker wuchs zusammen mit einem drei Jahre älteren Bruder (Vic) in seinem Geburtsort Sheffield im West Riding of Yorkshire auf. Mit 16 Jahren verließ er die Schule. [1] Nach manchen Presseberichten soll seine Motorik durch Kinderlähmung gehemmt gewesen sein, „was die einzigartigen Zuckungen und Greifbewegungen“ zur Folge gehabt habe.
