Julius Hemphill. Avant-garde jazz composer and saxophonist (born Forth Worth, Texas, January 24, 1938 - died New York City, April 2, 1995 at the age of 57 of complications from heart disease and diabetes). Hemphill is probably best known as the founder of the World Saxophone Quartet, a group he formed in 1976 and left in the early 1990s.

5. März 2021 · There’s a terrific quintet performance from 1978, in Los Angeles, that includes the clarinetist John Carter, who taught Hemphill in Fort Worth. A 1979 live date with Hemphill and Carroll joined by bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette lives up to its promise, but in some ways it’s the anomaly of the set.
