Amos Tappan Akerman (February 23, 1821 – December 21, 1880) was an American politician who served as United States Attorney General under President Ulysses S. Grant from 1870 to 1871. A native of New Hampshire, Akerman graduated from Dartmouth College in 1842 and moved South, where he spent most of his career.

12. Sept. 2002 · Amos T. Akerman was a Georgia lawyer who served as U.S. attorney general during Reconstruction. He supported the Confederacy, the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, and the federal land subsidies for railroads. He also prosecuted the Ku Klux Klan and ended its activities. He died in 1880 after a sudden attack of rheumatic fever.
Amos T. Akerman was a Confederate veteran who became U.S. attorney general in 1870 and served until 1872, when he resigned over his opposition to the Ku Klux Klan. He was a former teacher, lawyer, and state constitutional convention member who faced the Credit Mobilier scandal, railroad magnates, and the KKK.
