Anibal Cavaco Silva, Portuguese politician who served as the country’s president (2006–16) and prime minister (1985–95). A longtime member of the Social Democratic Party, Cavaco Silva was something of an elder statesman of the center-right in Portugal.

Aníbal António Cavaco Silva, born on 15 July 1939, in Boliqueime, Loulé (Algarve), was the 19th President of the Portuguese Republic, elected by universal suffrage at the first round in 2006 and likewise re-elected in 2011, standing as an independent candidate. He ended his two presidential mandates on 9 March 2016.

The free-market economist played a key role in preparing Portugal’s entry in 1986 to the European Economic Community (EEC; later the European Union) and served as prime minister from 1985–95.
