Urodził się w londyńskiej dzielnicy Chelsea jako syn angielskiej aktorki Judy Campbell (1916–2004) i Davida Birkina (1914-1991), komandora podporucznika Królewskiej Marynarki Wojennej i szpiega podczas II wojny światowej.
