Welcome to VFW Post 3820. The Angel of Mount Shavano. Erosion gullies in the rugged flanks of 14,225-foot Mount Shavano in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains just west of Salida, Colorado, hold snow which forms the head, body, and arms of its famous "Angel." The mountain was named for a chief of the Tabegauche band of Ute Indians.
It is a more direct route, and takes hikers over the Angel of Shavano, which is a snow feature that looks a bit like an angel on Shavano’s southeast slopes. This begins the same way along the Mount Shavano trail, but hikers diverge from the Mount Shavano trail around 10,600 feet, (about 3/4 of a mile after turning on the Mount Shavano Trail.
The Angel Snowfield is now directly in front of you and commands your full attention. Hike up to the base of the Angel at 11,600 feet. Now the fun begins! The Angel Snowfield is not a difficult or challenging climb whatsoever. It is a fun, easy snow climb which steadily climbs up Shavano at a constant 30-35 degree slope.

The Angel of Shavano Campground is ideally suited for tent camping. The campsites are wooded with aspen and spruce trees along the north fork of the south Arkansas River. The Angel of Shavano Trailhead for the Colorado Trail #1776 is across the road from the campground.
