14. Aug. 2004 · References to the Olympics returning to their spritual "home" ran through a ceremony that lifted the mood in Athens. The evening began with the five flaming rings - the symbol of the Olympics - being lit on the flooded infield and ended more than three hours later with the lighting of the Olympic flame by Nikolaos Kaklamanakis, windsurfing gold medalist from the 1996 Games.
The 2004 Summer Olympics Torch Relay took the Olympic Flame across every habitable continent, returning to Athens, Greece. Every city which had hosted, will host, or coincidentally elected to host the Summer Olympics until the 2028 Summer Olympics was visited or revisited by the torch , as well as several other cities chosen for their international importance.
The whole world is paying a triple homage to Greece this evening. Humanity owes you this marvellous adventure that is the Olympic Games, created by you 28 centuries ago in Olympia. The world is also honouring you for having revived these Games in 1896, here in Athens, heeding the call of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games.
