Auguste Beernaert was a Belgian statesman who served as prime minister of Belgium from 1884 to 1900 and as the president of the Interparliamentary Union from 1899 to 1908. He was also a leading pacifist and a promoter of international law and arbitration. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912 for his efforts to end the war in the Congo and to promote international peace.

Auguste Beernaert (1829 - 1912) Belgium. Prime Minister and Inter-Parliamentarian. Auguste Beernaert was one of Belgium's most skilful lawyers. In 1873 he became a member of the Government, and from 1884 to 1894 he was King Leopold II's Prime Minister.

He was born in 1829 in Ostend, Belgium and died in 1912 in Lucerne, Switzerland. He was homeschooled by his mother and later attended the University of Louvain in 1846.
