Sugar Pie DeSanto packed astonishing power and plenty of personality into a tiny frame. Her spunk and vigor impressed bandleader and producer Johnny Otis enough to sign her to her first recording session in 1955 after witnessing her performance at a San Francisco talent show.
17. Aug. 2018 · “Chocolate City,” the half slow-grind/half funk lead tune, covers DeSanto’s formative years. “That’s my song!” she says. “I wrote that from the spoils of San Francisco, coming up in the Fillmore. And that’s true stuff. It’s not jive. The life I lived at that particular time.”
