Binah (meaning "understanding"; Hebrew: בִּינָה Bīnā) is the third sephira on the kabbalistic Tree of Life. It sits on the level below Keter (in the formulations that include that sephirah), across from Chokhmah and directly above Gevurah. It is usually given four paths: from Keter, Chokhmah, to Gevurah and Tiphereth.

Binah is the source of Primordial Wisdom, of which it is the basis and foundation. The understanding of life is at the Binah level of consciousness. In the text called ‘The 32 Paths of Wisdom’ it is called ‘the Sanctifying Intelligence’. In this sephirah are two major forces, that of creation and that of destruction.

Binah is the elaboration, understanding the aspects and particulars of the plan, idea or solution. Chochmah encompasses the entire idea, but in a nutshell. Chochmah remains elusive without the groundedness of Binah figuring out how the details will come to play.
The word binah comes from the Hebrew word for "between" (beyn), and implies the ability to distinguish the real from the unreal, the true from the false. Proper understanding, then, comes from "rightly dividing the word of truth" ( 2 Tim. 2:15 ), since it is in the Scriptures that we are given the "knowledge of the Holy One" ( 2 Tim 3:16 ).
