What still makes BENEATH THE SHADOW worth watching is the cast. Gô Ayano who I never really recognize (take that as a compliment!) and the always great Ryûhei Matsuda are both fascinating characters and carry their roles very well. So, overall I wished I'd liked this more but as it is, it's rather a disappointment.
This is an abstract film, packed with many metaphors, subtle hints, and unspoken dialogue, leaving the viewers to fill in the blanks themselves. Beneath the Shadow has a dark, brooding story that can be deciphered in many different ways. The theme of the movie is loneliness, featuring a sad and sympathetic main character in need of companionship.

14. Sept. 2020 · His latest endeavor, Beneath the Shadow, is based on Eiri (影裏), a 2017 Akutagawa Prize-winning queer drama novella by Numata Shinsuke, that deals with the matters of the heart, vulnerabilities that slither in with emotional attachment, and the often-overlooked intricacies of life.
Like its award-winning literary inspiration, the enigmatic tale of fly fishing, drinking and male bonding skirts obvious interpretation. Laden with subtext, heavy with meaning and metaphor, nearly every line, and action can be read both literally as well as symbolically.
