The first drummer for Fort Payne's own country group Alabama died Monday at the age of 58. John Bennett Vartanian, 58 of Fort Payne, passed away, causing Alabama fans from all over to put in calls to the Alabama Fan Club in Fort Payne, questioning the cause of his death, according to Misty Monroe with the club.
In 1972, they recruited friend of Jeff’s, Bennett Vartanian, as the band’s drummer. In 1973, the band moved from Fort Payne (Alabama) to Myrtle Beach (South Carolina), where they became the house band at a club called “The Bowery.” They would play six nights a week for tips, honing harmonies that would become a trademark for the band ...
