Die Band wurde 1961 auf der Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo von Carolyn und Milly Gill, Bertha und Norma Barbee, sowie Betty Kelly gegründet. Sie begannen zunächst in Clubs und auf Partys zu spielen und bekamen dann einen Plattenvertrag bei IPG Records, wo sie ihre erste Single There He Goes aufnahmen.

Bertha Barbee-McNeal was an artist who helped establish the greatest soul music label of all time, but also had a second act spreading the joy of music to multiple generations of students in her adopted town of Kalamazoo. She will be missed by both her local community and by the soul music world.
