Birkenhead ( / ˌbɜːrkənˈhɛd /) is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Merseyside, England; historically, it was part of Cheshire until 1974. The town is on the Wirral Peninsula, along the west bank of the River Mersey, opposite Liverpool. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 88,818.

The town of Birkenhead is situated in the north eastern part of Wirral and offers many things to visit and explore. It’s also home to the iconic Birkenhead Town Hall, the focal point of Hamilton Square which was first opened back in 1887 and refurbished in 2001.

Birkenhead is a town on Merseyside, England, on the Wirral peninsula in the historic county boundaries of Cheshire, across the River Mersey from Liverpool. It is not a tourist destination in its own right but can make for a rewarding afternoon trip from Liverpool, and is well worth a couple of hours.
