Bob B. Buchanan is a professor emeritus of plant and microbial biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He is known for his research on thioredoxin, a disulfide protein that regulates redox metabolism in bacteria and plants. He has also studied the diversity and function of actinomyces, a type of bacteria that produces propionic acid.
Professor Buchanan has made a series of major discoveries that are fundamental to our understanding of the biochemistry of plant metabolism. He established the ferredoxin-thioredoxin system as a mechanism for the light mediated redox regulation of the enzymes involved in carbon dioxide fixation during photosynthesis.
