Bobbie Lee Gentry (born Roberta Lee Streeter; July 27, 1942)  is a retired American singer-songwriter, who was one of the first female artists in America to compose and produce her own material.   Gentry rose to international fame in 1967 with her Southern Gothic narrative "Ode to Billie Joe". 
Country singer/songwriter Bobbie Gentry was born Roberta Lee Streeter on July 27, 1944 in Chickasaw County, Mississippi. Gentry grew up in poverty on her grandparents' farm after her parents divorced when she was a little girl. She learned to play piano by watching the church pianist.
