Bruce McCandless II (born Byron Willis McCandless; June 8, 1937 – December 21, 2017) was an American Navy officer and aviator, electrical engineer, and NASA astronaut. In 1984, during the first of his two Space Shuttle missions, he completed the first untethered spacewalk by using the Manned Maneuvering Unit .

26. Juli 2023 · The former NASA astronaut, who was the first to fly untethered from his spacecraft in the Manned Maneuvering Unit, died on Dec. 21, 2017. He was a retired U.S. Navy captain and a member of the Apollo 14 and Skylab support crew. He also flew as a mission specialist on two shuttle missions and helped deploy the Hubble Space Telescope.
