27. Juli 2018 · The first documented appearance by Bunny Berigan with Tommy Dorsey’s band occurred on Monday, December 28, 1936, on the NBC Raleigh-Kool show. (*) The exact personnel of the TD band on that date, or on the January 4, 1937, show, is not known. Bunny’s presence is obvious however from the trumpet solos on those two shows.
Berigan appeared in 1934 musical short "Mirrors," and played with Benny Goodman's orchestra on Goodman's first two hit records as well as Tommy Dorsey's band on two hits. He also organized his own band but it broke up due to severe debt and Berigan's alcoholism, which eventually led to his early death on June 2, 1942. Fox Lake holds an annual Bunny Berigan festivalevery May.
Bunny Berigan. Bunny Berigan, a trumpeter with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, started a band in 1937 and chose "I Can't Get Started" as his theme song. He had been performing the song during the previous year at a club in New York City.
Bunny Berigan enjoyed a relatively brief period of fame, lasting from 1931 through 1939 -- for the first half of those eight years a rapidly rising name within the music business, and for the second as a star before the public, featured in the bands he played in and leading his own outfit.
Yet, Berigan’s work as a sideman during 1931 to 1936, when many would say that he was at his most potent, were largely neglected by jazz reissue labels, until Mosaic released 151 of them as a 7-CD set, "The Complete Brunswick, Parlophone and Vocalion Bunny Berigan Sessions," in 2003. Happily, Mosaic made Bunny's daughter, Joyce, aware of the project.
