We got our start as Camp Fire Girls in 1910, founded by Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick and his wife, Charlotte Vetter Gulick. They believed girls deserved the outdoor learning experiences that boys had and wanted to help “guide young people on their journey to self-discovery.”.
Charlotte Gulick, who with her husband Luther Gulick founded the Camp Fire Girls, explained to a New York Times reporter in 1912 that American girls faced a crisis. The many “changing conditions of our National life” made urgent the need for a national organization for America’s adolescent girls.

Juni 2023 · Designed as a corollary to the Boy Scouts of America, the Camp Fire Girls aimed to create a program that would bridge school and home, encourage outdoor play within nature, and highlight what they saw as the distinct gendered experiences and expectations of girls to build a stronger United States.
Camp Fire was founded as Camp Fire Girls in 1910 by Luther Halsey Gulick, M.D., and his wife, Charlotte. It is the first non-sectarian organization created for girls in the United States. Mrs. Gulick developed the watchword, Wohelo, and parts of this ceremony in the summer of 1910.
