Nach dem Tode seines Vaters 1732 war er erneut Herzog von Savoyen. Im Polnischen Erbfolgekrieg 1733 schloss er sich Frankreich an, eroberte das Herzogtum Mailand, besiegte die Kaiserlichen bei Guastalla und erwarb Novara.
