  1. Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, 14th Duke of Alba, GE (19 May 1794 – 7 October 1835) was a Spanish aristocrat. [1] Biography. Born in Madrid, Spain, in 1794, he was a descendant of James FitzJames, 1st Duke of Berwick and through him, the exiled King James II of England & VII of Scotland.

  2. The painting´s name derives from the pomegranate held by the Virgin, which prefigures Christ´s sacrifice and resurrection. Acquired in Florence in 1817 by Carlos Miguel Fitz-James Stuart y Silva, 14th Duke of Alba de Tormes, it remained in the family since that date.

His intelligence, culture, and love of travel were the driving forces that led him to add valuable artworks to the collection, such as The Virgin of Granada by Fra Angelico, and Pathway to the Market by Rubens.

  6. The job of rebuilding the palace was undertaken by the 17th Duke of Alba, Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart, and finished by the 18th Duchess, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart and her consort, Luis Martínez de Irujo. Manuel Cabanyes was the architect charged with constructing the new Liria Palace.
