Biografia. Cedric Gibbons nacque a New York nel 1890 dall'architetto irlandese Austin P. Gibbons e dall'americana Veronica Fitzpatrick. Nonostante fosse in possesso di un certificato di nascita statunitense, Gibbons affermò sui moduli di censimento di essere nato in Irlanda, a Dublino, e che la sua famiglia era emigrata negli Stati Uniti durante la sua prima infanzia.
