Charles Stebbins Fairchild (April 30, 1842 – November 24, 1924) was an American businessman and politician who served as United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1887 to 1889 and Attorney General of New York from 1876 to 1877.
About. History. Prior Secretaries. Charles S. Fairchild (1887 - 1889) Charles S. Fairchild (1842 - 1924) became Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Daniel Manning in 1885. When Manning's health forced him to retire in 1887 President Cleveland promoted Fairchild to Secretary of the Treasury.
After Cleveland's defeat in 1888, Fairchild served as president of the New York Security and Trust Company in Manhattan until 1905. He also remained active in politics as a "Gold Democrat." He was an opponent of women's suffrage, challenging the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in the US Supreme Court.
