Of Planter descent, Charles Tupper was born on his father’s small farm outside Amherst. Since his father was a co-pastor of the local Baptist church and his mother “a pious, devout woman,” Tupper was taught the merits of hard work and self-discipline, but his childhood appears to have been happy.
Tupper was one of the earliest advocates of an active role for Maritime Baptists in the foreign mission field, especially in Asia, and for many years he served on the Baptist convention’s Board of Foreign Missions.
