  4. We can't really fault Sumner for failing to imagine that de jure segregation in the South would be eradicated, for the most part peacefully, within less than 30 years. More importantly, the modern criticisms are unfair because they ignore the sensitivity with which Sumner portrays the indignities (and worse) that African-Americans still had to endure silently in the American South in the 1940s.
