Justice Clarence Thomas has lived a uniquely American life. Born on June 23, 1948, in the small coastal community of Pin Point, Georgia —a community founded by freed slaves after the Civil War—Thomas grew up in the segregated South of the Jim Crow era. Thomas’ father deserted his family when Thomas was very young.
In Printz v. United States, the Court held that Congress could not require state officials to conduct firearm background checks. Justice Thomas agreed that the law violated the Tenth Amendment. He added, though, that the Second Amendment might include a “ personal right to keep and bear arms,” which the Court did not accept at the time.
Clarence Thomas is the second black justice to serve on the Court. As a Supreme Court justice, Thomas is notorious for his lack of questions during oral arguments.
