  3. Claude Driskett Hopkins was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on August 24, 1903. He grew up in Washington D.C., where he studied medicine and music at the local Howard University and the Washington Conservatory. After playing with several college bands, Hopkins went to New York in 1924 to join the Wilbur Sweatman Orchestra.
