Clewer was divided in 1894 into Clewer Without and Clewer Within, the latter comprising the eastern part of the parish, which is within the borough of Windsor. Clewer Without has an area of 1,900 acres, of which about three-quarters are permanent grass, while the amount of arable land is about twice that of the woods and plantations.
Clewer Village. In the Shadow of Windsor. The name derives from Clifwara meaning Cliff-Dwellers, i.e. those who lived below the hill on which Windsor Castle was built. The castle site was actually in Clewer manor until acquired by William the Conqueror for his new residence.
