Cliffords Inn gets its name from one of the ancient Inns of Chancery which stood on the site for about 600 years until the early 1930s. It was built on land originally rented in 1304 from the powerful Clifford family. The arms of Cliffords Inn are based on the arms of the Cliffords, but with a red border all around as shown above.
Thavie's Inn, attached to Lincoln's Inn, had already gone, in 1769, whilst the final inn of chancery (Clifford's Inn) was sold in 1903.
