Die Firma wurde im März 1931 als Electric and Musical Industries Ltd als Zusammenschluss von UK Columbia Records und Gramophone Company/HMV gegründet. Die Wurzeln von EMI reichen damit zurück bis in das Jahr 1898, als die Londoner Gramophone Company unter Beteiligung des Schallplattenpioniers Emil Berliner gegründet wurde. [2]
