The Commentaires sur Corneille is a work of literary criticism by the French Enlightenment writer and philosopher Voltaire, collecting and analysing the dramatic works of Pierre Corneille (1608–1684). [1] It was first published in 1764, [2] printed in Geneva in twelve volumes. [3]
Voltaire claimed that his monumental Commentaires sur Corneille was among his proudest achievements. However, though highly influential within his own lifetime the commentary quickly generated hostility from critics, and even embarrassment, after the eighteenth century.
