Carlos Wesley "Don" Byas (October 21, 1913 – August 24, 1972) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, associated with swing and bebop. He played with Count Basie , Duke Ellington , Art Blakey , and Dizzy Gillespie , among others, and also led his own band.
Vic Damon Studios, Kansas City, believed to be from September 1942. The discovery of these 1942 acetates from Kansas City is a revelation for all musicologists and Parker fanatics. These tunes, in conjunction with the recent discovery of the 1942 Bird with McShann now comprise the most important early Parker to date!
23. März 2024 · Don Byas (1912-72) was a swing-era musician, several years older than Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk, who were the oldest of the beboppers. Classically trained on violin, clarinet and alto saxophone, he switched to tenor saxophone on moving to the West Coast in the 30s.

Jan. 2003 · Oklahoma born tenor saxophonist Don Byas moved easily between swing and bebop with an earthy, blues sound that brings to mind Coleman Hawkins but with a lightness of touch and rhythmic agility reminiscent of Lester Young. He successfully synthesized these two influences, in many ways updating them into the bebop era.
