He graduated from Technical High School in Velikiye Luki (1902), Constantine Artillery School. (Konstantinovskoye Artilleriiskoe Uchilishche), St. Petersburg (1904) and the Imperial Nicholas Military Academy (1912). After graduation he served in the 2nd Artillery Brigade of the 20th Infantry Division 1st Caucasian Corps
After graduating from the Dvinsk (now Daugavpils) realschule, he attended the Saint Petersburg Polytechnical Institute before transferring in 1915 to the Constantine Artillery School in Petrograd, from which he graduated in 1916, receiving command of a battery, and later of a company.

After graduating from Constantine Artillery School in September 1908, he was conferred the rank of podporuchik and assigned to the 20th Turkestan artillery brigade. In 1911, he was poruchik, serving in 6th battery. In 1912, he was assistant-chief of the 2nd Caucasian artillery practice polygon.
