The History of Oaks Day. The VRC Oaks, a prestigious race for three-year-old fillies, was first run in 1861, coinciding with the inaugural Melbourne Cup. Over its history, the race has been known by three different names: the VRC Oaks (1861 – 2006), the Crown Oaks (2007 – 2016), and, as of 2017, the Kennedy Oaks.
