Though their marriage was short-lived his second marriage to Cyd was one of the longest in Hollywood history, 60 years, and ended with her death in 2008. Of course Cyd Charisse, a former dancer with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, was the better dancer, but unless she was dancing, she was leaden, a problem Ginger Rogers NEVER had. It's also worth nothing that Astaire and Rogers danced together on film for the first time in 1933.
Yes, "Broadway Melody" is kind of an overlong, though well-done piece for Gene Kelly, though I do think Cyd Charisse is damn wonderful; this is what made her a star, though she had been doing small and featured parts at MGM for years.
