The original members were Neil Sedaka, Hank Medress, Eddie Rabkin, and Cynthia Zolotin; however, Rabkin was replaced in 1956 by Jay Siegel. In the same year the band recorded its first single, "While I Dream", with Sedaka on lead vocals; the song was a local hit in New York. Sedaka and Howard Greenfield wrote much of the group's early material.

Piano prodigy Neil Sedaka and falsetto specialist Jay Siegel recruited lead tenor Eddie Rapkin, Cynthia Zolotin, and Hank Medress (born November 19, 1938) from choral class to form The Linc-Tones. They squeezed rehearsals around Neil's piano practice (he surprisingly usually sang bass).
The group was led by Neil Sedaka, who would go on to a distinguished career as a songwriter and performer; he was joined in the Linc-Tones by Hank Medress, Eddie Rabkin, and Cynthia Zolotin. By the time the group made their recording debut in 1956, Rabkin had left, and Jay Siegel took his place.
Cynthia Zolotin, Eddie Rabkin and classical piano prodigy Sedaka decided The Tokens sounded better as a name; Rabkin left the following year and was replaced by Siegel.
