David Herbert Lawrence wurde am 11. September 1885 als Sohn eines Bergarbeiters und einer Lehrerin in Eastwood (Nottinghamshire) geboren. Zunächst Lehrer, musste er diesen Beruf wegen seines Lungenleidens aufgeben, dem er 1930 erliegen sollte. Von 1912 an lebte er als freier Schriftsteller.
