Daniel Nathans was born in Wilmington, Delaware on October 30, 1928. He was the youngest of eight children of Russian Jewish immigrants Samuel and Sarah Nathans. Like many families, the Nathanses fell on hard times during the Great Depression, but Nathans would later remember only the good humor and warmth of his parents and siblings.
