Dave Burgess (born December 13, 1934, Beverly Hills, California, United States) is an American guitar player, singer, songwriter, and band leader of The Champs.
The Champs are an American Rock and roll band, most famous for their Latin-tinged 1958 instrumental single "Tequila". [1] [2] The group took their name from that of Gene Autry 's horse, Champion, [2] and was formed by studio executives at Autry's Challenge Records [3] to record a B-side for the Dave Burgess single, "Train to Nowhere".

Dave was a solo artist at Challenge and also contributed guitar and vocal on various sessions. One afternoon, with only 15 minutes of studio time remaining, Dave asked the other musicians if they could assist him with a B-side for his soon to be released “Train To Nowhere.”
In 2020, group leader Dave Burgess resurrected The Champs and recorded 12 new tracks for an LP titled Tequila Party. The album contains a "party" version of "Tequila". Covers and references in popular culture. Eddie Platt took the tune to No. 20 in the U.S. in 1958. Stan Kenton and His Orchestra covered "Tequila" for Capitol Records in 1958.
Dave Burgess formed The Champs in the mid-50’s and the band had their first hit with “Tequila” in 1958. So here we are 62 years later and Dave, now in his 80’s has re-recorded five of The Champs’ biggest songs and written seven new songs for his new album, Tequila Party .
