Warranted as a midshipman in January 1884, he was assigned to the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, HMS Alexandria two years later.

David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936), naval officer, is buried in St Paul's cathedral but as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath he has a stall plate in the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey. He served in the Mediterranean fleet and was well known for his qualities of leadership.

He led the battle-cruisers at the Dogger Bank and Jutland, where he lost three of his ships.
