Warranted as a midshipman in January 1884, he was assigned to the flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, HMS Alexandria two years later.
David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty (1871-1936), naval officer, is buried in St Paul's cathedral but as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath he has a stall plate in the Lady Chapel at Westminster Abbey. He served in the Mediterranean fleet and was well known for his qualities of leadership.

In 1914 Beatty was one of the youngest admirals in the Royal Navy, and, as commander of the battle-cruiser squadron of the Grand Fleet, held one of the navy's most prestigious appointments. He led the battle-cruisers at the Dogger Bank and Jutland, where he lost three of his ships.
