Er war 1973 Gründungsmitglied von Montrose und gehörte dieser Band bis zu ihrer Auflösung 1977 an. Dem Montrose-Frontmann Sammy Hagar blieb er v.
Mit Bill Church (Bass), Denny Carmassi (Schlagzeug) und Sammy Hagar (Gesang) gründete er Montrose. Das erste, selbstbetitelte Album erschien bereits im ersten Jahr der noch jungen Bandgeschichte. Obwohl das Album nie eine nennenswerte Chartplatzierung erreichte, wurde es 1986 in Amerika mit Platin ausgezeichnet.
Denny Carmassi went on to work with several local bands in the Bay Area and began working with Montrose and Sammy Hagar in the 1970s. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Denny Carmassi worked with the Gamma, Heart, Cinderella, .38 Special and Stevie Nicks, Ted Nugent, and Whitesnake.
