With his brother Tommy playing trombone, they formed Dorsey's Novelty Six, later called Dorsey's Wild Canaries, one of the first jazz bands to broadcast. In 1924 he joined the California Ramblers (who were based in New York City). He did much freelance radio and recording work throughout the 1920s.

Zusammen mit seinem Bruder Jimmy Dorsey gründete Tommy schon in den zwanziger Jahren in Shenandoah die Dorsey's Novelty Six; sie spielten beide auch bei den California Ramblers und in der daraus abgeleiteten Studioband The Little Ramblers.
Bereits um 1917 herum gründeten die Brüder als "Dorsey's Novelty Six" eine Gruppe, benannten die Formation später in "Dorsey's Wild Canaries" um. Sie traten in Baltimore auf und waren bereits zu dieser Zeit im örtlichen Rundfunk zu hören.
