11. Feb. 2022 · After the Normans invaded Ireland, the area that we now know as Drogheda was divided into two, and it was split between what we now know to be counties Meath and Louth. It was in the 12th century, not long after the Norman invasion, that Hugh De Lacy (Lord of Meath) constructed a motte-and-bailey castle at the top of a hill in the town.
Geschichte. Drogheda United wurde zwar bereits 1919 gegründet, doch spielte die Mannschaft stets in unterklassigen Ligen. Als sich in Drogheda die Idee eines Profiteams für die League of Ireland entwickelte, wurde nicht United verstärkt, sondern 1961 ein neuer Verein gegründet: Drogheda F.C. Dieser wurde 1962 bei einer Ligareform in die Football League of Ireland aufgenommen.
