Nachdem Anfang der 1970er Jahre sein Bruder Duane und das Band-Mitglied Berry Oakley jeweils bei Motorradunfällen tödlich verunglückt waren, brach sich Gregg im Jahr 1975, ebenfalls bei einem Motorradunfall, das Schlüsselbein. In den 1970er Jahren war Allman mit der Sängerin und Schauspielerin Cher verheiratet.
Die eigentlichen Allman-Brüder, Duane und Gregg, spielten zuvor in verschiedenen Gruppen, u. a. den Escorts, den Allman Joys und zuletzt Hour Glass. Als Hour Glass ihren Plattenvertrag verloren, gründete Duane die Allman Brothers Band. 1969 brachten sie ihr zunächst wenig beachtetes erstes Album heraus, The Allman Brothers Band.

He and his brother Duane Allman formed the Allman Brothers Band in 1969, which reached mainstream success with their 1971 live album At Fillmore East, but shortly thereafter, Duane was killed in a motorcycle crash.
