During the 1950s, Hefti did not get as much respect as a musician and band leader as he did as composer and arranger. In a 1955 interview, Miles Davis said: "if it weren't for Neal Hefti, the Basie band wouldn't sound as good as it does. But Neal's band can't play those same arrangements nearly as well." [10]

2. Nov. 2015 · November 02, 2015. Neal Hefti: The Band Years. Hearing Neal Hefti: Forever in Time, a newly released double-CD from the U.K.'s Jasmine label, reminded me how superb Hefti was in the 1950s as a composer, arranger and conductor of his own studio orchestras.
In early 1944 Neal was in conversation with Woody Herman's bass player, Chubby Jackson, who recommended him to Herman where he was to become a member of the First Herd trumpet section. Hefti contributed many fine arrangements and compositions to the Herman library, such as Wildroot, Apple Honey, Goosey Gander, The Good Earth , and many more.
