1995 äußerte Mark Knopfler den Wunsch, nicht mehr weltweit auf Tournee zu gehen. Fortan gab es keine öffentlichen Konzerte der Dire Straits mehr. Am 19. Juni 1999 traten Mark Knopfler, John Illsley, Alan Clark und Guy Fletcher, verstärkt durch Ed Bicknell am Schlagzeug, ein letztes Mal als Band auf John Illsleys Hochzeit auf.

12. Aug. 2022 · Bicknell nimmt die Nachwuchscombo unter seine Fittiche und verschafft ihr einen Vertrag bei der Polygram-Unterabteilung Vertigo. Nach einem Engagement der Dire Straits als Vorgruppe der Talking Heads erscheint die finale Fassung von ›Sultans Of Swing‹ schließlich im Mai 1978 offiziell als UK-Single – und zündet nicht.
ED BICKNELL – Manager of Dire Straits December 1977 to August 2000. Ed Bicknell was born in 1948 and educated at Yorkshire’s Tadcaster Grammar School. From 1966-69 he attended Hull University graduating with a degree in Social Studies. At Hull University Ed became Chairman of the Entertainments Committee, a position he held for two years.
