Ed Bicknell ranks high in the premier league of popular music managers, but he is also a musician in his own right. As any Notting Hillbillies fan will tell you, Ed is a whiz on the drums! He began playing drums as a teenager in Tadcaster where he studied from the Buddy Rich Drum Tutor under the close supervision of his teacher, Alick Sidebottom.

Die Gruppe erhielt einen Plattenvertrag; das Management übernahm Ed Bicknell, der Mark Knopfler bis 2000 auch auf seinen Solopfaden begleitete. Das Debütalbum Dire Straits wurde in Großbritannien anfangs kaum beachtet und ging auf dem Höhepunkt der Punk -Welle zunächst unter.
1977: Ed Bicknell wird Manager der Dire Straits. 1978: Im Januar treten die Dire Straits als Vorgruppe der Talking Heads auf. Im Februar wird das erste Album "Dire Straits" aufgenommen. Im gleichen Jahr geht die Band auf Ihre erste große Tour in den Niederlanden, Belgien und Großbritannien. Das Album „Sultans of Swing" landet in den Charts.
